History, Arts and Fun – All Rolled Into One!  

Enjoy daily programs at Roanoke Island Festival Park aboard the Elizabeth II, in the Settlement Site and in the interactive Roanoke Adventure Museum. A docudrama entitled “The Legend of Two Path,” an Art Gallery, boardwalks, waters edge performance, Museum Store and more are also on site. Events scheduled year-round. Visit the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum, just a block away, that features a working boathouse and the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse. The screw-pile light is a reproduction of one that stood near the site. View the permanent display on the history of the structure. Hours vary seasonally. Roanoke Island Maritime Museum  

The Roanoke Island Maritime Museum will offer a variety of maritime skills, boat building, adult sailing programs and workshops throughout the year in the Creef Boathouse. Visit the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse and learn the history of the screw-pile lights. Times and dates vary seasonally. Outer Banks Jewelry Exposition  

A group of jewelry designers join forces this month to host a day-long exposition and month-long show with the focus on beauty, style, technique and education. The mid-month exposition will feature demonstrations, educational displays and a chance to talk with artists as well as purchase handcrafted jewelry in time for the holidays. All artists participating have been working in their field for a number of years and make the Outer Banks their home. 13th Annual Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival

The Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival, a six-day celebration of the wild side of the Outer Banks region of North Carolina, is set for Nov. 3-8, 2009 which spans Veteran's Day weekend. The festival offers over 85 programs in themes ranging from paddling and wildlife photography to birding, natural history, and more! This festival is traditionally set during the "shoulder season" when rates are lower for accommodations, traffic is light and the weather is mild. Wild Women on the Outer Banks

Reawaken your “sense of place” by participating in the “Wild Women on the Outer Banks Weekend”. Women will have the opportunity to explore maritime forests, beaches and marshes of the Outer Banks. Activities include kayaking, wild edibles foraging, nature crafting, “behind the scenes” opportunities and more. Participants can even “sleep with the sharks” in front of the 285,000-gallon Graveyard of the Atlantic exhibit. This one-of-a- kind opportunity is conducted in partnership with the Nature Conservancy’s Nags Head Woods Preserve. Registration begins on October 1, 2009 with participation limited to 22 “adventurous women” ages 21 and above. The cost is $300 per person. North Carolina Aquarium Society Members receive a 10% discount. Botanical Illustration

Botanical Illustration Botanical imagery is used throughout the design world and has been a staple in design for thousands of years. In the last ten years there has been a renaissance of interest in botanical painting. This class is for those people who love the natural world and would like to try their hand at creating their own botanical illustrations. The class will cover drawing and painting flowers, fruit and vegetables using traditional watercolor techniques. It will be helpful, but not necessary, to have had some experience drawing and painting in any medium. Content: An overview of the history of botanical illustration will be offered. The importance of direct observation from nature will be emphasized using the traditional medium of watercolor to depict flowers, fruit and vegetables. Botanical Painting Class with Linda C. Miller

Botanical Painting Class with Linda Miller: Make a great gift and holiday card creating a botanical painting of a Christmas Rose. December 15-16 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, please bring your lunch. There will be a 45 minute break. Call 252-473-1554 to register. This class is open to all levels, especially those without drawing or watercolor experience. The instructor will provide the drawing and students will create an 8"x10" painting focusing on wet and dry brush techniques and learn how to mix a variety of greens, commonly used in traditional botanical art. Students will also create a smaller study, 4"x6", that can be added to a holiday card. Work at your own pace while Miller uses this time to give each student individual attention. 106th Annual Celebration of the Wright Brothers First Flight
